Surrounded by nature on all sides, Chandragutti Fort is a wonderful place that unfolds historical moments of that era. The fort is situated between Soraba taluk and Siddapura in the Shimoga district of Karnataka. Standing on an altitude of about 848 meters, this rocky mountain is also famous for Renukamba Cave Temple dedicated to Goddess Renuka. The area of Chandragutti was also called as Chandraguptapura during ancient times. In 3rd to 6th centuries AD, the fort was controlled by Kadambas of Banavasi.
According to an inscription of 1396 A.D., the region of Chandragutti was ruled by Bachanna, a local ruler and also described that later the area was under the control of Keladi Nayakas. Thousands of devotees visit the cave temple of Renukamba every day. There is also many other small temples, and five ponds are located on the same hill. Chandragutti is the best place for trekkers and rock climbers as it offers a wide-activity area for adventure lovers.
